Are puppy training classes worth it?

Well we certainly think so!

Whether this is your first puppy, or 20th, puppy training classes are an essential part of learning to navigate the world.

Even as an experienced dog trainer, I still take my dogs to training classes. Why? Because it is essential that my dogs can focus and listen to me when out and about, and in new places. It also ensures that I schedule the time for training, Life gets busy!

Puppy classes set your dog up for life. Who they are as a puppy is who they grow up to be as an adult. That means, any behaviour you are seeing now – good or bad – is pretty much what you will be stuck with for the rest of their life!

The good news is that you can change that behaviour if you want to. The earlier you start them on the right paw, the easier training becomes. We all will know how hard it is to break a habit that we have always done.

We also know that you will have TONS of questions! Each dog is different, so if you have your very first puppy, or first time owner of a different breed, the breed behaviours that they can come with can be somewhat of a surprise!

No one told me that Tokyo the Malinois would occassionally grab my ankle as I walked down the stairs! ? Thankfully I stopped that one pretty quickly, but thats herding breeds for you!

But that is what class is for….

Not just teaching the basic behaviours puppies need in order to live a happy life, but to ask us absolutely anything. I think you would be surprised how common your question may be!

  • Toilet training
  • Mouthing/Biting
  • Grabbing hands/feet/clothing
  • Separation/sleep/calmness questions.
  • Best food or treats to use.
  • Neuter/spaying

But my dog can already do sit/down/stay etc

Thats fanastic! Well done you for getting started on your training nice and early!

95% of puppies in our classes can already do a sit. Its usually the very first thing we train! The second behaviour being a paw shake. Thats why we don’t spend too much time on this. However, its always good to practise behaviours in a multitude of different places.

My puppy has not learned sit yet.

Thats absolutely fine too! Whether you have focused on other things, like socialisation, or just don’t know where to start, don’t worry, you are not behind, all is not lost! We will teach you how to teach your puppy to sit. But remember, it takes plenty of practise at home too.

Even if your dog can do, or has started, the behaviours we are teaching in class, its always worth going over again in a different setting. You can’t over train things!

Training Feedback

Often training is not about the dog, but the person at the other end of the lead. We see an average of 50 dogs per week. In most cases the training only needs a few minor tweaks. Whether its timing of the reward, placement, relaxing more, or just not knowing when or what to reinforce. Owners don’t inherently do anything majorly wrong.

Feedback is such a useful tool which can see your puppy go from not knowing what you want, to reading you like a book.

We love working with distractions, can your puppy listen to you while other puppies and people are around?

Distractions are a part of life, and dog training is more than doing repetitive behaviours in your living room. Puppy classes are a fantastic way to test and improve your puppies focus on you.
